How often should I visit my dentist? What will happen if I don’t?

when you should visit the dentist

Good question!  The frequency varies depending on the individual.  If you take really good care of your teeth and gums at home, it’s recommended that you visit your dentist twice a year, every 6 months.  Even if you are taking excellent care of your teeth, if you don’t visit your dentist, you put yourself at risk of cavities, gum disease, bacterial infections, and other illnesses that could be caused by poor oral health.  There could be issues that you may not immediately see or feel that your dentist could identify before you even experience any discomfort or pain.

What’s best for your Dental Hygiene? Why your Visit to the Dentist is Important

During your regular visits, a dentist and dental hygienist will recommend a thorough teeth cleaning.  It doesn’t matter if you’re the world’s most avid brusher, flosser, and rinser, everyone needs to undergo a professional cleaning for the buildup of plaque between the teeth and under the gums. At this point, your dentist will be able to identify if there are any cavities or changes in your oral health. More importantly, your dentist will also check for any signs of gum disease or oral cancer.  If identified in the early stages, it is possible that it can be treated before the condition worsens.

On the contrary, people who are more prone to cavities, bacterial infections, or have a weak immune system should expect that their dentist would recommend visiting with them more frequently, possibly every 3 to 4 months.

You may be at High-Risk without knowing

Bear in mind that even if you have excellent oral health, the need to visit the dentist may change in a lifetime if your health changes or if you find yourself in any of these high-risk groups:

If any of these health conditions apply to you, you’ll need to visit your dentist every 3 to 4 months as these conditions can make any individual more susceptible to developing cavities, bacterial infections, or gum disease.  Your dentist can then determine the best treatment needed to prevent these things from happening.
